The complete collection
Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation. Uphold me with a willing spirit.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. O God, you will not despise a broken and contrite heart.
Sing to Yahweh a new song! Sing to Yahweh, all the earth.
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice. Let the sea roar, and its fullness!
Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.
Be glad in Yahweh, you righteous people! Give thanks to his holy Name.
Make a joyful noise to Yahweh, all the earth! Burst out and sing for joy, yes, sing praises!
Let the sea roar with its fullness; the world, and those who dwell therein.
Let the rivers clap their hands. Let the mountains sing for joy together.
Nature seemed to me benign and good; I thought she loved me, outcast as I was; and I, who from man could anticipate only mistrust, rejection, insult, clung to her with filial fondness.
I feel I have adequate cause to be happy, and I will be happy.
Sara hugged her close and tried to laugh. There was a sort of comfort in the warmth of the plump, childish body.
Everything was strange and silent and she seemed to be hundreds of miles away from anyone, but somehow she did not feel lonely at all.
He did not know how long he sat there or what was happening to him, but at last he moved as if he were awakening and he got up slowly and stood on the moss carpet, drawing a long, deep, soft breath and wondering at himself. Something seemed to have been unbound and released in him, very quietly.
Now I know hope and joy.
Now I rejoice in the consciousness that I can think, act and attain heaven.
I remember an hour when I was discouraged and ready to falter. For days I had been pegging away at a task which refused to get itself accomplished.
There, too, after a fit of temper, I went to find comfort and to hide my hot face in the cool leaves and grass.
What a joy it is to feel the soft, springy earth under my feet once more, to follow grassy roads that lead to ferny brooks where I can bathe my fingers in a cataract of rippling notes, or to clamber over a stone wall into green fields that tumble and roll and climb in riotous gladness!
Every one must have felt that a cheerful friend is like a sunny day, which sheds its brightness on all around; and most of us can, as we choose, make of this world either a palace or a prison.
I’ve been trying to cure it for forty years, and have only succeeded in controlling it. I am angry nearly every day of my life, Jo, but I have learned not to show it, and I still hope to learn not to feel it, though it may take me another forty years to do so.
She felt comforted at once by the sympathy and confidence given her.
But, you see, Jo wasn’t a heroine, she was only a struggling human girl like hundreds of others, and she just acted out her nature, being sad, cross, listless, or energetic, as the mood suggested.
Feeling this, Jo’s burden seemed easier to bear, duty grew sweeter, and life looked more endurable, seen from the safe shelter of her mother’s arms.
