Let’s come before his presence with thanksgiving. Let’s extol him with songs!
Sing to Yahweh a new song! Sing to Yahweh, all the earth.
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice. Let the sea roar, and its fullness!
Make a joyful noise to Yahweh, all the earth! Burst out and sing for joy, yes, sing praises!
Let the sea roar with its fullness; the world, and those who dwell therein.
Let the rivers clap their hands. Let the mountains sing for joy together.
The heart has its reasons, which reason knows not, as we feel in a thousand instances.
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Competence to age is supplementary youth; a sorry supplement indeed, but I fear the best that is to be had.
From a poor man, poor in Time, I was suddenly lifted up into a vast revenue; I could see no end of my possessions; I wanted some steward, or judicious bailiff, to manage my estates in Time for me.
It is Lucretian pleasure to behold the poor drudges, whom I have left behind in the world, carking and caring; like horses in a mill, drudging on in the same eternal round--and what is it all for?
I feel I have adequate cause to be happy, and I will be happy.
To be together is for us to be at once as free as in solitude, as gay as in company.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear; and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
Now, old age is as it were the playing out of the drama, the full fatigue of which we should shun, especially when we also feel that we have had more than enough of it.
In such cases friendships should be allowed to die out gradually by an intermission of intercourse.
In the face of a true friend a man sees as it were a second self.
Now friendship may be thus defined: a complete accord on all subjects human and divine, joined with mutual goodwill and affection.
it is in regard to friendship, as in so many other things, so supple and sensitive that it expands, so to speak, at a friend's good fortune, contracts at his misfortunes
you would wonder at seeing how possible it is to live as secludedly in the midst of a multitude as in the centre of solitude
When gone from hence, may nobody think of me again, except when one or two may think perhaps how I loved them
Does it seem to you so small and worthless a thing to be good and happy?
If a man is unhappy, remember that his unhappiness is his own fault; for God has made all men to be happy, to be free from perturbations.
For solitude is a virtue with us, as a sublime bent and bias to purity, which divines that in the contact of man and man--in society--it must be unavoidably impure.
