We shall enter into any war with a full consciousness of the awful consequences that it always entails, whether successful or not, and we, of course, shall make every effort consistent with national honor and the highest national interest to avoid a resort to arms.
William Howard TaftverifiedInaugural Address·March 4, 1909

It is notorious that a single successful effort of moral volition, such as saying 'no' to some habitual temptation, or performing some courageous act, will launch a man on a higher level of energy for days and weeks, will give him a new range of power.
229
War should never be entered upon until every agency of peace has failed; peace is preferable to war in almost every contingency.
231
I won't have a problem with you if you aim high and miss, but I will have a real problem if you aim low and hit.

If you dream of it, it isn't impossible. You long for it because it's meant for you. You are meant to drop fears and inhibitions and chase what sets your soul on fire. A shake up in your current life is almost always followed by something better, something awesome.

236
It is never wrong to do the right thing.

238
I will not follow where the path may lead, but I will go where there is no path, and I will leave a trail.

Wrongly attributed

Universally attributed to Emerson, and it is in none of his essays, journals or letters. It is Muriel Strode, an American writer almost nobody has heard of, in the August 1903 issue of The Open Court. The rewriting is the interesting part: Strode wrote a vow in the first person about herself, and the version that circulates has been turned into an instruction issued to somebody else. Do not go where the path may lead is not what she said. I will not follow is.

239
You can change your life sooner than you think. Take that chance you feel unworthy of. Make the decision that scares you. Change one habit you feel you never can. Don't underestimate your power. Get started. Momentum will build. Progress will compound. Every move counts.
